Lyn Lifshin
march 7 1996
i was the mute
that met you
at the train station
took you to the raven
where you were to read
i was so in want of words
stuttering and stammering
did you think me dumb
i said nothing i wanted
yet then again
what words does one say
to a woman of words

what is this world
what is this world to me
who never was or will ever be
a part of the pleasures of this earth
who never was of any worth
who was born of dust to die in dirt
who knew not love but only hurt
to wander this world and wonder why
i was to live alone without love only to die

the what?
The Gorillabunny
I saw
the gorillabunny's
shadow on the
the wall
but the gorillabunny
I never saw
By reason
of his shadow
the gorillabunny
must be
for why would
he have a shadow
and a shadow
not have he

lined paper
Lined Paper
Words become prisoners
on lined paper
Words should be free
of confinement
Words should be able
to wonder where they will
In schools and in
stationary stores
all the paper is lined
with the bars of prisons
Not even permitting
a picture to be drawn
Are they afraid
of unruled paper
that words will be unruly
that words will
become anarchists
that words will revolt
and be revolting
Don't give me a line
and demand that
I write on it
Don't even give me
a dotted line
to sign on
I'll sign where I want
I protest against lines
They are not for words
nor are they for people
And if one can't
write in a straight line
Than let one write
in a crooked line
Running where it will
Up and down but free
even to run off the paper
And maybe if we were
to free words from lines
then we would be able
to question others
lines of thought
and learn to think
straight and clearly
for ourselves
which is much
more important

i knew splendid love
I
i knew splendid love
when you and i embraced
and little cupids whispered
outside of doors
and fluttered on silent wings
in dark passages down halls
and held their tiny hands
over giggling mouths
when they caught us kissing
on the couch
and turned to hide
their wide eyes in opened hands
when they saw us
touching secret places
places know only to us
II
i knew wonderful love
when you and youth
were all i had
when now was all
we lived to love
and loved to live
and the past was only
our last kiss
still wet upon our lips
and the future
so far away
so many years away
was the night
that hid our nakedness
in dreams known only to us
III
i knew magnificent love
when you were my religion
your body my temple of worship
your eyes the windows to heaven
your words my only nourishment
the water of your mouth my drink
and i would bury myself
so deep in you
so completely lost in you
until i knew not myself from you
till we were as one
a thing know only to us
IV
i knew glorious love
when your beauty
was the envy of every goddess
and each one of them
would have gladly given
their immortality
to posses even a small portion
of your beauty
and all the gods
came from on high
to gaze on and worship you
to kiss the ground at your feet
and i not knowing how or why
captured your sweet heart
and won the world's greatest prize
all wrapped up in you
and you and I were the first
to discover true love
a love known only to us

together
Together
Let me
Drink from
Your mouth
Peel away
Your clothing
Cover you
With my eyes
My hands
My lips
My love
Wrap you
Around me
Until we
Overflow
Together

contemplating
Contemplating
Your absence
Not seeing your face
Or your figure
Not touching
Your heart
With love words
Your lips
With mine
Your breasts
With kisses
Your nakedness
With hands
Not hearing
Your soft voice
Speaking love words
Makes the emptiness
That fills my heart
