may God have mercy on all the poor
may God have mercy on all the poor
trying to live in baltimore
taxes so intolerably high
the impoverished never get by
afraid of criminals in the street
afraid of policemen on the beat
afraid of kids that beat for fun
afraid of drivers that hit and run
all the criminals in city hall
are there to steal and break the law
anarchy in the city courts
unfairness and injustice of all sorts
may God bless all the poor
trying to live in baltimore

cold comes the winter wind
cold comes the winter wind so brutally bitter
blowing the last brown lifeless leaves from the tree
bringing the snow soft white to bury this bleak city
leaving me this longing for what will never be
of this unloved life and wicked world i weary
dying day by day dying till by death God delivers me

the world never was
this world never was
nor ever will be mine
on me this world's sun
never did favorably shine
the fruits of this world
were for me but bitter wine
the mundane sensual food
too worldly on which to dine
love i would never possess
for which i would always pine
sweet melancholy is the only thing
in this world that is mine

the self portrait
the self portrait
painted in words
so unsightly
an image no one
will embrace
forlorn lovelorn
forever falling
the fumbling figure
with the unfortunate
disfigured face
the poor pathetic
pitiful person
that will never find
in the picture perfect
an appropriate place

sullen scene
sullen scene
drizzling day
crushing clouds
gloomy grey
mournfully moving
sorrowful shadow
driven down
sad slow
painful path
leading low
lessening light
stark save
somber sight
grievious grave

doctrines divide
doctrines divide
doctrines divide
the crowd cried
and i replied
they do they do
doctrines divide
the false from the true
the wrong from the right
the dark from the light
it cannot be denied
doctrines divide
