lined paper
Lined Paper
Words become prisoners
on lined paper
Words should be free
of confinement
Words should be able
to wonder where they will
In schools and in
stationary stores
all the paper is lined
with the bars of prisons
Not even permitting
a picture to be drawn
Are they afraid
of unruled paper
that words will be unruly
that words will
become anarchists
that words will revolt
and be revolting
Don't give me a line
and demand that
I write on it
Don't even give me
a dotted line
to sign on
I'll sign where I want
I protest against lines
They are not for words
nor are they for people
And if one can't
write in a straight line
Than let one write
in a crooked line
Running where it will
Up and down but free
even to run off the paper
And maybe if we were
to free words from lines
then we would be able
to question others
lines of thought
and learn to think
straight and clearly
for ourselves
which is much
more important
